How Tools are Made
First off, I never knew (nor would I have guessed) until today that there was a blog for the National Association of Manufacturers. It's shopfloor.org...pretty clever. Even more cool, their April 1st entry (seriously) focuses on Cool Stuff Being Made and features a 'video of the week' about how hand tools are manufacturered.

The video actually focuses on Channellock, manufacturer of high-quality pliers, screwdrivers and other hand tools. Lots of cool technologies involved, like high-end CAD programs and precision manufacturing equipment. A little 'made in the USA' pride is mixed in there for good measure.

Power Tools are Booming
Power tool sales in the US are projected to grow at a 5.1% rate over the next five years, hitting $11 billion by 2011 according to MarketResearch.com. While historical growth has been driven largely by the professional trades (electric saws and pheumatic nailers were the big sellers), gung-ho DIYers are projected to be an increasing factor.
The reason? Cordless tools, of course. That and the increasing interest by Americans in home improvement activities. General innovations in tool usability and technology seem to have something to do with it, too.
Seems like a fine time to start a blog on power tools... ;-)
