DIY Emergency Earthquake Kits (Part III)

DIY Emergency Earthquake Kits (Part III)

Home Essentials

If your home is destroyed in a natural disaster, one of the first things you must do is turn off your water, gas, and electric. Find out where your shut-off locations are and acquaint yourself with how to turn them off. It’s a smart idea to have a wrench handy for this task. Other fundamentals you need if the power goes out are:

Matches will come in handy if there’s an earthquake.
  • Pliers
  • Camper Stove
  • Matches
  • Aluminum Foil
  • Signal Flare
  • Writing Utensils and Paper
  • Sewing Kit
  • Flashlight
  • Batteries
  • Utility Knife
  • Tape
  • Disinfectant Spray
  • Chlorine Bleach

Gear

Not only is gear convenient, but some of these items could be lifesaving when dealing with shattered glass and debris. Be sure you have one of the following for each member of your household:

  • Watch
  • Whistle
  • Respirator Mask
  • Flashlight
  • Heavy-Duty Work Gloves

Solar-powered or portable phone chargers are also a smart idea. You can also add to the list: an ax, nylon rope, GPS, small shovel, and jumper cables.

Hygiene

Be sure to stock up on plenty of toiletries like toothpaste, toilet paper, feminine supplies, shampoo, mouthwash, soap, toothbrushes, floss, and a liquid detergent. You can find travel-sized items practically in any store.

Clothing

If you have to leave your house, it’s critical to wear and pack clothes that are right for the outdoors. Dress in layers, pack extra warm socks and choose a moisture-wicking fabric like Merino wool. One brand, SmartWool, has a good line of base layers and socks that keep you dry and warm. For shoes, wear a pair of durable hiking boots. This will help protect your feet should you need to walk through debris or broken glass.

Pack spare socks and underwear for everyone in the family and don’t forget gloves and hats. For outerwear, puffy down jackets are good because they keep you warm but also pack down and take up little space, unlike bulky jackets and coats.
