Starrett Miter Saw Protractor

This is one of those tools that can turn an amateur carpenter into a professional. Just push this protractor into whatever corner you're cutting trim for and it automatically shows you the angle to set the miter saw at. (Hint: it's almost never 45 degrees.)

There are other ways to get a tight miter or bevel joint, but this is one of the easiest and quickest. My only quibble is that I wish the dial was bigger - readings less than a half degree are very tough to quantify.

The Starrett 505A-12 ProSite Protractor is available from hardware stores and internet suppliers for under $50.
