Powder Actuated Nailers

We have been sinking walls in the basement lately. This has involved nailing the sole plates (2x4's at the floor) into the concrete. At first, we thought we would have to use fasteners such as red head wedge anchors (http://www.ramset-redhead.com/rh_as_intro.asp) that would involve a lot of drilling, etc. Luckily, we found a Remington single shot powder actuated nailer on the Home Depot web site for less than $10.
This tool (pictured at the top) uses a .22 caliber powder load to shoot a nail through the wood and into the conrete. It seems dangerous and it is, but with care these tools are extremely
useful. With the proper care and safety precautions, the nailer makes it easy to nail into concrete or steel. I won't go into details on use here, but we should have something on our blog (nightmare link) soon. One thing is for sure, you need safety glasses and ear protection, the .22 shell is loud indoors. The price can range from $20 to $200, depending on the options. The typical DIY homeowner with a small to medium job will find the cheaper models to be sufficient.
Last night I found a couple reviews:
A write-up in the June/July 2000 (#132) of Fine Homebuilding and a more recent web
review at buildernewsmag.com http://www.buildernewsmag.com/viewnews.pl?id=368.
