Review: Shur-Line Paint Edger
When we moved to Oregon we were very surprised by the “orange peel” finish on all the walls. Back home everything was “flat”. We were even more surprised to find how difficult it was to paint a straight edge along the ceiling. We couldn’t use the tape method we were used to because paint leaked underneath the edge of the tape and we couldn’t put a straight-edge along the ceiling for the same reason.
After numerous trials and tribulations, we started experimenting with paint edgers. Luckily, the first tool we used was the Shur-Line paint edger.

After having success with the Shur-Line, we assumed all edgers were the same, and when we lost it, we purchased a different brand. Honestly, we lose things a lot, so we’ve purchased numerous edgers. Nothing compares to the Shur-Line edger!
The wheels have a little give, so they roll along the bumpy ceiling without altering the straight line and the pad allows you to pull it down a millimeter or more, which means you don’t have to run the pad right along the ceiling which can be risky. You’d be surprised how being able to pull the pad down just a millimeter improves the line!
And, whatever you do, don’t purchase the Shur-Line edger that costs $1 more. We made this mistake thinking, “If the regular one is great, this one must be spectacular!” Wrong. The handle swivels, meaning that you won’t have such an easy time holding your arm and hand steady.
Oh, and one quick tip—make sure you always start your edger by placing it about 2 feet below the ceiling, and coming up the wall at about a 45 degree angle, and finally meeting the wall with a parallel line. Then, when you stop with your line, again, swing your arm down the wall at a 45 degree angle. This extra step on both ends helps considerably because you’ll get rid of the excess paint going in and it stops you from creating an unnecessary buildup when stopping.
Note: Laurie uses the Shur-Line Edger all the time and has painted more rooms and walls than anyone she knows. Eric says the tool works well (from what he has seen Laurie do).
