Review: Wagner Power Roller 980 (Paint Quick, Cleanup Slow)

Last year when we bought our fixer-upper, we knew one thing was going to have to change right away--the peach/orange/burgundy colors on every wall and on every ceiling. Having painted the interior of a house before (sometimes two or three times - and all this in three short years), we didn't feel like slowly working our way through the house room-by-room. So, in a quest to paint our house in a short period of time, we invested in the Wagner Power Roller 980.

I can tell you that we've lived in our fixer-upper for almost 7 months now, but we've only used the Wagner Power Roller for one day. You might assume that we painted the entire house in a day; however, this is not the case.

The power roller was extremely easy to use. Assemble the product, dock the gallon of paint to the Wagner, push the button, and begin rolling. Eric quickly moved around the living room as I followed behind carrying the gallon of paint (the project moved so quickly that Eric found it cumbersome to routinely pick up the can to move, which was attached to the roller by a long winding tube). We were both impressed at how quickly the ceiling was painted. Soon the entire room was done. We thought, "Should we paint the dining room ceiling too?" Sure! It was so easy. It only took 90 minutes to finish all of this. We couldn't believe how quickly time went by.

However, then came the cleanup. With numerous little parts, a special little bristle brush for cleaning, and a lengthy process, cleaning the contraption took longer than painting the rooms! Since Eric had been in charge of painting, I was saddled with the cleanup. If you do not like cleanup, this product is not for you. And, if you have problems keeping track of tools, you'll never be able to easily keep track of all the parts that go with this power roller (not to mention the directions which are imperative to understanding how to use it).

On the other hand, if you want to paint an entire house and have a couple of people with serious muscle (there is no way I could have painted the room so quickly, luckily Eric is a rock climber), you could paint the interior of a smaller home in one day. In fact, we didn't need to apply a second coat in any of the rooms we painted--and that is a first for us.

Eric says the Wagner 980 was amazingly quick and easy to use. Laurie says clean up was too much trouble- - not worth the money unless you are tackling a large project in a short period of time.
